Tom Woods, a nineteen year old 11th grader from Taylor County High School, was the winner of the First Annual Taylor County Race for Literacy. Mr. Woods won the race with a very impressive 17.5 minutes time in the 5K race (3.1mile). The race was held on Saturday, April 26, 2008 in Reynolds, GA. Other male winners in various age categories included the following: Christian Tinkey, Colin Little, Andrew Burkett, Dennis Chavez, Brent Kilby, Chad Ansbaugh, Stanley Siror, Irving Bush, Mike Posey, Bill Harrison, Matt Troutman, Jack Eubank, Benny Wade, and Bub Way.
Grace Tinkey, a twelve year old from Macon, was the overall winner for the female category. Miss Tinkey won in her category with a very impressive time of 19.49 minutes.
Other winners in the female category included the following: Kamryn Anthony, Amber Moore, Taylor Moore, Kathryn McInvale, Amy Rouse, Beth Peterson, Rachael Brenton, Karen Clements, Debbie McDonald, Betsy Moore, Brenda Wall, Lynda Armona, Carol Carden, and Violet Carden.
The Taylor County Certified Literate Community Program is very appreciative of the strong support given to the Adult Education Program in Taylor County. Approximately $4,000 was raised for GED (General Educational Development Test) scholarships and Adult Education operations at the Flint River Technical College Taylor County Center in Butler. Race sponsors included State Farm, Barrow and Byrd Properties, Partners Propane, Lejaes Hair Salon, Benns Printing, EK Knight Scrap Material, BB&T Banking & Trust, Northside Food and Gas, Fort Wayne Citgo, Brown Brothers Sand, Flint River Community Hospital, Central Bank of GA, Peed Brothers, State Farm- Jerry Weldon, H&J Travel Plaza, Ray’s Paint and Body, Smith’s Pharmacy, Eubanks Custom Builders, Watson Brothers, Sub Way, Peachtree Electric, Flint Energies, CVS, and Silver Dollar Raceway.
The Taylor County Certified Literate Community Program is also thankful to Alton Ford, Opal Wilder, Cindy Davis, and Rhonda Jenkins, 5K Race committee members.
